Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival

Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival is undoubtedly the most famous event in Kainuu summer. Started in 1970 it has grown into one of the largest music festivals in Finland. Thousands of music lovers from all over the world come to listen to the festival’s sweet summery notes every year.

In addition to the high-level musicianship, Kuhmo Chamber Music has become known for its atmosphere, the so called “Kuhmo spirit”. The setting for the concerts is created by Lammasjärvi lake, almost grazing the walls of the concert halls, and the incredible clear light of the north.

The unique Värikallio is located in the northern reaches of Hossa national park and can be visited throughout the year.

A Region of Tar Burners

The history of tar making dates back thousands of years. The technique used traditionally used in Finland was tar burning in a pit, i.e. dry distillation of wood. The tar barrels were transported to Oulu in the coast by boat. The large rapids of River Kajaaninjoki were the biggest obstacles for the oarsmen rowing tar barrels to Oulu. The canals built in the rapids of River Kajaaninjoki were the solution.
