Harness Racing in Kajaani
Harness racing is a fast-paced sport that offers unforgettable experiences and excitement. Finland is one of the top countries in Europe in harness racing, and Finnish expertise of harness racing represents the top of the world.
In addition to the Vermo main race track, there are 18 regional racetracks in Finland. One of them is in Kuluntalahti, located about 10 kilometers north from Kajaani. The race track is easily accessible along the highway number 5.
The track and the training areas are kept in a good condition throughout the year, but the competitions are focused on the summer season. The competition activities are partly run by team of volunteers, and the regional clubs play a significant role in running the activities.

A Region of Tar Burners
The history of tar making dates back thousands of years. The technique used traditionally used in Finland was tar burning in a pit, i.e. dry distillation of wood. The tar barrels were transported to Oulu in the coast by boat. The large rapids of River Kajaaninjoki were the biggest obstacles for the oarsmen rowing tar barrels to Oulu. The canals built in the rapids of River Kajaaninjoki were the solution.
