LankaFest in Puolanka
Experience a rock festival in a small and remote municipality in Kainuu!
Puolanka is a small municipality in Kainuu, known for its pessimists. But you probably haven’t heard of LankaFest, a rock festival arranged annually in Puolanka market place area, in the beginning of July.
The history of LankaFest dates back to 2010, as four local bands were performing at the local school gym and . The event was found to be so popular, that it was arranged again the following year, but this time outside at the park and with eight bands performing. In 2012, LankaFest was transferred to the market place area and in 2014 the festival became a two-day event . From those days on, the festival has been developing steadily.

A Region of Tar Burners
The history of tar making dates back thousands of years. The technique used traditionally used in Finland was tar burning in a pit, i.e. dry distillation of wood. The tar barrels were transported to Oulu in the coast by boat. The large rapids of River Kajaaninjoki were the biggest obstacles for the oarsmen rowing tar barrels to Oulu. The canals built in the rapids of River Kajaaninjoki were the solution.
