Kainuu Orienteering Week

The oldest Finnish Orienteering Week promises unique experiences in the varied terrain, rich culture and pristine natural environment in the Kainuu area.

Kainuu Orienteering Week Finland is an annual, international orienteering event that has been held since 1966. Steeped in Finnish tradition Kainuu Orienteering Week is the second- oldest orienteering week in the world

The event is arranged in a different location in Kainuu each year. The terrain in Kainuu features numerous hills, clean waterways and spectacular forests. There is a wide variety of orienteering terrain types in Kainuu.

The event attracts participants of all skill levels, from absolute beginners to top performers. There is a series for everyone interested, from children under the school age to 95-year-olds.

Kainuu Orienteering Week is known as a holiday and orienteering week for the whole family. There are a total of four race days and two rest-days to recover in between, enjoying Kainuu.

Kainuu Open

Kainuu Open is the culmination of the Kainuu golf season. It is played annually on the three golf courses of Kainuu. Katinkulta Golf, Kajaani Golf and Paltamo Golf courses are played on consecutive days.

Dance Pavilions

In Finland going out for social dancing is a traditional way to spend time, meet people and enjoy music. Especially at summertime there are plenty of summer pavilions open, often located in beautiful places in the countryside.

Värikallio Rock Paintings

The paintings of Värikallio, made with blood and red ochre, are estimated to be 3,500–4,500 years old. More than 60 figures can be identified from the sheer rock wall rising out of Lake Somerjärvi. The mystical animal and human figures are believed to be related to hunting or shamanism. The unique Värikallio is located in the northern reaches of Hossa national park and can be visited throughout the year.

Kajaani Poetry Week

The annual five-day festival is held in the beginning of July. The programme consists of performances from many different forms of art as well as meet and greets and discussions with authors.

Kuhakunkku Fishing Competition

Oulujärven Kuhakunkku, based in Paltamo, is a fishing competition specialized in pike perch. The event also hosts a side party.

Literature Tourism

The national epic Kalevala is a central element in Kainuu`s literary culture. In 2019, Kuhmo became part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network founding their application on the strong connection between Kuhmo and the Kalevala, and the many ways the Kalevala influences the everyday life in Kuhmo. In addition to Elias Lönnrot who compiled the Kalevala, Kainuu has also other famous writers such as Isa Asp, Eino Leino, Ilmari Kianto and Veikko Huovinen, whose trails to follow!
